Challenge/Opportunity
A high-end specialty-flour distributor to the Asian marketplace was competing against traditional products from China, Japan and Korea, and needed a grade of flour that would possess the quality of the imported brands, at a lower cost. Since few U.S. milling companies had the know-how or interest to meet the company’s rigid specifications, they were forced to buy expensive flour from outside the U.S.
In order to remain competitive, the company recognized that it had to partner with a domestic miller.
Solution
Bay State Milling embraced the challenge and began collaborating with the distributor’s sales and grain departments to find a hard white wheat that would produce the necessary characteristics and specifications. The result was a grade of flour comparable to the imports’, at an economical price.
Results
The distributor has now switched from their former exporter to Bay State Milling. Its costs are lower, allowing it to compete more effectively against the imports. In addition, the continued collaboration with Bay State Milling has allowed the flour quality to continue to improve.
